About You:
I am 50, fat, and bald. Seriously bald. I currently play keys in an all-original band. Except for one 35-year-old pup we are all grownups. For about 5 years (circa Men At Work, Flock of Seagulls, Urban Cowboy) I worked as a full-time club musician in SoCal with the odd road trip here and there. I finally figured out that the superstardom which had so skillfully and inexplicably eluded me could only be attained by hard work. Lots and lots of hard work. Crap.
Please keep this forum about your music - not about stuff or services you sell. Agree?

A New Business Model

I don't like to work at music. I don't mind it when something grabs me and I spend six days looking for just the right sound or mix, causing my wife to think I may have been abducted by aliens. What I mean is that for me enjoyment is the first and only reason I play. If the fun goes away, it becomes work. Because of this I have so far managed to avoid both wealth and fame. (Though I must admit that, given the right conditions, I would jump on that tour bus tomorrow.)

I can't help feeling, thoug… Continue

Self-tuning Les Paul

I found this on del.icio.us. Half of me says it is pathetically lazy, the other half says, "Whoa, this is cool!" Read the story here.

Hey John, I wasn't able to play it on the computer I'm on. Problems. I haven't set up the mac yet. But I was able to listen to And Your Bird Can Sing. Did you play that? It was great. Can you tell me what tuning was used?

How about "I See the Light", "Incense and Peppermint", "Time Won't Let Me" , "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "Wooly Booly" and "Green Onions"?

All those classes are good. It all depends on what you want to do with what you learn. If you want to design, study styles and flash and graphics and layout. PHP, ASP, Perl, Python, VBscript, Java and Javascript are programming scripts and languages for the web and will take a bit more commitment. Higher demand for those jobs but it is more oriented toward application development.

FTP is pretty straightforward. Most hosting services have Dashboards that allow the setup and configuration of an FTP server. My recommendation for you as far as the "parking lot" is to register a domain name and get a hosting service provider with the capacity and download pricing that will be agreeable. For instance: johnparkerMP3s.com registered at namesecure.com and then pick a hosting somewhere like http://www.top-10-web-hosting.com/compare.htm

A buddy asked me to sit in for him in his Irish band during his two week vacation. He gave me two weeks to learn the tunes. My guess is, I was his last resort or he would have lost the gig. If you look close, you will see that I am NOT happy. That genre of music is alien to me an I ABSOLUTELY needed the sheet music in front of me. Indeed, I was ABSOLUTELY focused on reading and keeping my place as I was apparently also the LEADER of the band while he was gone.
It went OK but was stressful. I got $80 for 4 gigs and built my reputation/repertoire.

The only winning move for a keyboard player in those days was to own the truck. If you did that you could find a way to stand in the back and direct while the bass player and guitarist moved one step closer to a truss!

Hi John,
THe P200 was a nice piece of work and it awakened me to a curious phenomenon in digital pianos. People used to leave the speakers on all the time even when connected to the mains PA etc. We eventually figured out that they liked the subtle vibration that the woofer put into the keybed and made it feel slightly more like a piano. My office made all the sounds in that piano and if memory serves me well the strings are in fact violas. We were having trouble getting a violin section to sound warm enough to match the instruments so I ended up putting in all violas with a couple of section violin samples on the op to make up the range. - oh and the EP is in fact Chic Corea's rhodes though I was not allowed to say so while I was with Yamaha!

And as far as the weight goes - I used to travel with B3, Rhodes, string Ensemble two Mini Moogs, a Multi Moog and whatever else was the flavor of the day - so you may not find me a gold mine of sympathy :-)

Keep on trucking!
